Interush Racing Team - NASCAR Race Report

Saturday, February 21, 2009

IMG_0706.JPG It was a perfect, lightly overcast day in California for NASCAR racing on the 2 mile oval track at the Auto Club Speedway, just one hour east of Los Angeles.

After two practice sessions on Friday, the qualifying laps took place on Saturday morning. Stanton Barrett qualified with the 37th fastest time of 47 entries. After compensating for team points, Stanton lined up in the Interush race car in the 43rd position for the start of the race. This was Stanton's second race of the 2009 season and the first race of the season for the Interush Racing Team. In attendance cheering for the Interush race car were Marty Matthews, CEO and Todd Mitsuishi, COO. Also in attendance was Stanton's brother David, a famous TV director and his girlfriend Kathryn Morris, a famous Hollywood television and movie actress.

At 5:00 pm with the sun starting to set behind the grandstand that can seat over 90,000 fans, the NASCAR race was underway, broadcast live on the ESPN Television Network throughout the USA and Canada.

IMG_0722.JPG When the flag dropped Stanton began to successfully challenge and pass many other drivers, driving at average speeds of over 170 mph, working his way up from 43rd position to 25th overall. The race was filled with exciting moments as one car burst into flames, from which the driver safely escaped, and other cars slammed into the wall and also each other. With just 10 laps to go and Stanton radioed his new crew chief (Paul Andrews) from the car that he was racing was starting to lose electrical power and this was decreasing engine power in the vehicle as well. Stanton continued to race to the best of the ailing car's ability, losing a few spots in the final 20 miles, to end the race in 28th position. While the team had hoped for a top 20 position, it was a good showing for the team, in that was able to pass 18 other cars, before the power started to fade after 280 miles of high-speed racing. When the race was over, Stanton conferred with his crew about the race car's performance. Over the next few days the team mechanics will determine exactly what happened to the vehicle.

The race was won by Kyle Busch who led the race for an impressive 143 of the 150 laps.

On Sunday morning, Stanton flew from California on the west coast, to Florida on the east coast where he will start testing his new IndyCar race car in advance of the start of the 2009 IndyCar Race season that starts in April. Then later in the week, he once again fly across the country, to drive in the third NASCAR race of the season in Las Vegas, Nevada.
