No Attack, No Chance! Takuma Sato Continues to Always Give His All

2010.05.10(Mon)

Most Japanese children are taught to be respectful of their elders, to be humble of their accomplishments and to work hard to live a good life. Takuma Sato, better known simply as "Taku," encompasses all of these Japanese traits, but he also has one that is found in a very few people anywhere in the world. That is, to never giving up on a dream, no matter what obstacles may be in the way.

Growing up in Machida City about 20 miles west of central Tokyo, Taku saw his first F1 (Formula One) race on TV when he was just 10 years old and he was immediately attracted to the speed and sounds of auto racing. He spent his youth dreaming about someday becoming an F1 Driver, but neither his family or friends were involved in auto racing, so while other F1 drivers such Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso were karting at 5 and 6 years old, Taku could only imagine himself taking the podium in his dreams.

Seeing how much his dream meant to him, his parents supported his desire to race by encouraging him to first race bicycles and then to race go-karts, which eventually led to an All-Japan Formula 3 championship for Taku. His parents recognized that to be one of the best, he needed to train with the best and so they allowed him to go to England at the age of 20to train and compete with some of the best racers in the world. Taku quickly rose in the ranks and his determination won him a place on the podiums of the Formula Opel Europe series and British Formula 3 series.

But even after winning podiums and many races overseas such as the prestigious Macau Grand Prix in 2001, the critics always seemed to doubt that a Japanese driver could ever compete in F1 because they didn't have the "steel nerves" of other top drivers. Despite this, in 2002 Taku earned a F1 seat with Jordan-Honda and finished 5th at the Japan Grand Prix in Suzuka, in front of all his fans in his home country.

This set the stage for what was to become one of the greatest accomplishments for any Japanese race driver in history. In 2003, Taku moved to BAR Honda and showed once again he could compete with the best by finishing 6th in the Japanese Grand Prix in the only race he entered that year. And in 2004, he raced a full season and finished 8th overall in driver's championship and he accomplished his dream of standing on the podium of a major F1 race by finishing third at the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis, becoming the most accomplished Japanese race driver on the world stage.

After several more years in F1, in the underfunded Super Aguri team, Taku decided that it was time for a new stage in his career by returning to the USA where he first stood on the podium, to drive in another world-class series, the Izod IndyCar Series in the #5 Lotus/Honda car of KV Racing Technology. This time however, Taku’s goal is not just to stand on the podium. It is to stand on the podium as the first-place winner of an IndyCar race. His philosophy of "No Attack, No Chance" will certainly help him toward accomplishing his goal as the Izod Indycar Series is considered to be one of the most challenging and competitive in the world with cars often going over 380 kilometers per hour which is 30 - 50 kilometers per hour faster at top speeds than the F1 cars Taku previously drove.

The Izod IndyCar Series is most famously known for hosting one of the three most famous auto races in the world, the Indy500, which attracts as many as 400,000 spectators on race day and reaches of over 400 million viewers on television in over 200 countries, and of course millions more now online. Taku’s competitors in the IndyCar Series come from all over the world including drivers from the USA, Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, England, Scotland, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand.
